When I’m angry, post punk is the only genre that I feel can really help me work through my emotion - moreso than rock or rap! This week I wanted to introduce you to post punk, incase you need to let off some steam, too.

You might be wondering, what is post punk and how is it different to punk rock? It emerged from the punk rock genre in the late 1970’s, it’s differences derived from the inclusion of many non-rock, experimental influences that you won’t find in punk rock. Post punk combines “the raw energy of punk with the experimental sensibilities of modernist art and literature.” You can read more about the history of the genre, here.

Some context:

Last Gateway Thursday was about EDM which of course falls under the umbrella of dance music. I’m using dance as the genre of this installment to refer more broadly to disco dance music, popularised in the seventies. That’s because generally, when someone says they like dance music, these sounds are what they are referring to. Otherwise, it is more common to specifiy the exact genre of dance music they like, if trance, electronica, techno, etc. is their favourite.

A bit of background on EDM:

EDM stands for Electronic Dance Music, which rose to popularity in the seventies. Although its country of origin is widely debated, it has long had roots in Jamaica, the American Midwest and Germany. EDM is actually “a compilation of electronic music subgenres that are intended for crowds of dancers, including disco music, synth-pop, techno, house music, trance music, drum and bass, dubstep, trap, hardstyle and more.”

Afro Beats is not a genre I’m well accustomed to, but similarly to R&B, many songs of the genre have snuck their songs into my playlists and enabled me to curate an Afro Beats playlist that’s both got the fundamentals, and some more experimental stuff.
